Questions to ask kids

15 questions to ask a 9-year-old

Nine-year-olds are working out where they fit: in friend groups, at school, in the family. They talk more when they’re doing something beside you, like in the car, than face to face across a table.

  1. 1What is something you’re worried about that you haven’t told anyone?
  2. 2Who do you feel most like yourself with?
  3. 3What is a song you can’t stop listening to?
  4. 4What makes a friendship last?
  5. 5If you could be any age for a week, what age would you pick?
  6. 6What do you think I worry about?
  7. 7What is the bravest thing you’ve ever done?
  8. 8What is the most embarrassing thing that happened this year?
  9. 9What would you change about how our family does things?
  10. 10What do you think the world will be like when you’re my age?
  11. 11What is something you’re proud of that nobody noticed?
  12. 12If you could learn anything instantly, what would you choose?
  13. 13What makes you angry?
  14. 14What do you want to remember about being nine?
  15. 15What is something you wish adults asked kids more?

How to get real answers

  • One or two questions, not the whole list. It’s a conversation, not an interview.
  • Ask side by side: in the car, at bath time, on a walk, at bedtime.
  • Don’t correct the answer. You’re collecting how they think, not checking it.
  • Write it down in their exact words, with their age. Ask the same question next year and compare.
cuote it

Keep what they answer, with their age on it.

Cuote keeps the funny things your kids say, and asks you a question like these on quiet evenings.
